Lydia Bugden,
CEO of Stewart McKelvey
As the first female CEO of a law firm in Atlantic Canada, Lydia Bugden is a prominent, accomplished and respected member of the Atlantic legal community. She has been with Stewart McKelvey for the majority of her career becoming CEO in 2015, an impressive feat for a multitude of reasons. Prior to 2008, the position of CEO did not exist at her firm and was uncommon across the country.
Lydia explains that over the last 10 years specifically, we’ve seen more women in leadership roles and now over 50% of the Stewart McKelvey Board are women.
She’s been fortunate to have a solid network that’s supported her throughout her life fueling her advice for young women - find your village. Anyone starting a business needs trusted advisors and sponsors. It’s important to find mentors who can advocate for your strengths and skills, and open doors for you along the way.
Everyone should start building this network early, and it starts with having the confidence to share and ask for help when needed. Lydia’s village has been there throughout her entire career and many of her advisors are still there for her today.
When building connections, it’s important to recognize that we are all equal, not the same, but equal. Richness from diverse backgrounds results in an inclusive environment.
Lydia’s experience, leadership skills and dedication is inspiring. It’s important to acknowledge women in leadership like Lydia, and those who have supported them along the way.
